Fatelessness Chapter 5

This chapter shows us a description of the three concentration camps in which George Koves was: Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Zeitz.

The first was the worst. Auschwitz was an extermination camp in which the Jews were treated really as animals, with horrible life conditions, a lot of murders because of the “gas showers” and the transfer to the crematorium.

George’s “favorite” camp was Buchenwald because the food was better, the barbers were more careful and the water of the showers was warmer.

The most important thing that happened on Zeitz was the encounter between George and Bandi Citrom, a prisoner who defended him from a Gypsy and showed him the real value of being alive and that he had to take care of him.

This chapter is highly descriptive because he (George) is simply recounting what is happening, as if this were the most natural thing in the world. Gyorgy shares his own thoughts without hadred or dislike; instead he leaves it to the reader to judge.

  3. Chapter V, is very important in the novel, because it shows and describes the three concentration camps, Auschwitz; Buchenwald; and Zeitz, where Gyuri was. As we read, we can notice the differences between the three concentration camps, which some of the were for killing and others for labor work. Also because they were in different places, Germany and Poland. These chapters are fundamental to know about what the people was feeling in those times, as Gyuri tell us what is happening.

  4. Excellent summary Youssef. Your detailed description of the main differences between the three camps in wich the narrator spent his captivity, let me understand clearly the different reflections and observations made by him in each place. Moreover, I think this chapter tooks a very important role in the book, as it established a comparison between the camps illustrating the different purposes the had (extermination camp in Auschwitz, labour camp in Zeitz and concentration camp in Buchenwald) so then we know how the protagonist live his experiences in each different place.
